Young, but pretty much acclaimed manufacturer Irix has brought a new great lens to the market – Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1. The company has made a lot of noise already with its 11mm and 15mm wide-angle lenses, and now enters the new world of macro shooters. Taking into consideration Irix success with its wide-angle lenses, the expectation to the new 150mm are pretty high also.
The new Irix 150mm is a modern telephoto macro lens with an extremely compact structure characterised by excellent optical parameters, refined ergonomics, a competitive price and a unique design. These make the lens the ideal tool for both professionals and aspiring enthusiast
150mm is a pretty long focal lens, but it definitely will be a nice choice for specific macro scenarios, when you can’t get closer to your subject or you’d like to avoid casting shadows into the frame. It will also be a good lens for portraits or product photography.
Irix introduced an optical design that should achieve the best possible resolution and overall image quality. It consists of twelve elements – three of which are made of super-low dispersion glass (ED), another four of glass with a higher refractive index (HR), and the whole arranged into nine optical groups. Due to this construction a nearly zero distortion ca be obtained (at a level of 0.1%).
New lens has a full-metal internal construction design. This should provide better rigidity and longer lifetime. The lens also comes with weather sealing (with 5 sealings in crucial places) providing nice outdoor capabilities for different environments – a nice bonus anyway.
The Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 lens is the first model available in the new version with the Dragonfly finish, in which the aluminium frame has been enclosed in an external structure made of aluminium-magnesium alloys and composite elements. The combination of Firefly and Blackstone features gave the lens lightness and solidity while maintaining high mechanical strength and resistance in difficult weather conditions.
The lens is also equipped with a focus lock function, allowing you to lock the focus ring after focusing on a subject. The focusing ring itself is rubberized and wide for comfortable use and smooth operation (with 270 degrees of rotation). It also is equipped with a special notch for usability.
Internal focusing allows to keep the constant dimensions, with no outstanding part (as many macro lenses have). This feature also is beneficial for weather sealing and overall tightness.
150mm Macro has 11 rounded aperture blades that will guarantee excellent sharpness even when used small aperture values. And also smooth circles for bokeh.
The lens is equipped with AE module allowing the use of semi-automatic camera modes (PASM). It also gives the opportunity to get confirmation of the focus from the camera. All EXIF data will be recorded for your image.
Taking into consideration that the lens is pretty heavy (840g), manufacturer also equips it with a tripod mount (with Arca-Swiss standard plate).
